Chapter Thirteen

We’ve descended seven flights of stairs when we finally reach a level of the building that isn’t labeled. There’s no number and no letter designating it, even to maintenance people. Interesting. And telling. This must be the floor where they’ve got my mother, surely? The nonexistent “detainee” floor?

“Lacey?” I ask, turning to her. “Is this it?”

She’s looking into a compact mirror and applying lip gloss as we walk. “Huh?” She lifts her eyes and glances around. “Oh. Yeah. We’ve found it.”

No thanks to her. I reach for the door handle.

“Wait!” she hisses. “There are guards on the other side.”

Crap. “How many?”

“Two.”

“Armed?”

“Yup. Some kind of handguns. In holsters at the waist.”

“Bloody hell,” Evan says.

Kale shrugs. “We’ll have to take them out.”

“Are you all mad?” Evan throws up his hands.

“I’ll distract them.” Lacey unbuttons her shirt another three inches. She’s wearing a silver lace push-up bra, and it reveals her twin, uh, snowy mountains. I think a helicopter could go down between them and never be seen again.

Evan is stunned into appreciative silence.

Kale too.

“Kale,” I order, “you take the left guard. I’ll take the right.” Despite my calm tone, my body buzzes with anticipatory adrenaline. My palms flood with sweat, and I have to focus on keeping my knees loose and my lower back relaxed.

Meanwhile, the guys are goggling like idiots at Lacey’s boobs.

“Kale!”

“Huh?”

Disgusted, I repeat myself.

Kale nods.

I take a deep breath. “Let’s go.”

Lacey snicks Jake’s card through the slot and pulls open the door. “Hi!” she exclaims. The guards are sitting in plastic chairs on opposite sides of the hallway.

Kale’s guard drops the newspaper he’s reading and just about swallows his tongue.

My guard smiles at Lacey. “You again?”

“Michael,” Lacey coos.

Then everything’s a blur as I lunge forward and plant my foot on his jaw, knocking him clean off the chair and onto the floor. His head cracks against the tiles, disorienting him, but he has the presence of mind to grab for the gun in his holster.

I stomp on his wrist with the full force of my hundred-odd pounds, and it snaps like a chicken bone. He gets out half a scream before I smother it with my hand and shove the barrel of his own gun smack in the middle of his forehead.

Meanwhile, Kale is the very soul of efficiency. He’s simply tossed his guard’s gun down the hallway and pinned the guy to the wall by the neck. He’s choked him out cold. Kale is talented that way.

He raises his eyebrows at me, as if to imply that I’m slow.

“Naptime, buddy.” I smash the butt of the gun into my guard’s skull and knock him into unconsciousness.

I stand up and wipe my palms on my skirt as Lacey looks down at him regretfully, her shiny lip gloss glinting under the fluorescent lighting.

“Poor Michael,” she says. “He gives a great back massage.” She shivers with remembered pleasure.

“He’ll live. And he’ll still be hot with a goose egg,” I tell her. I frown at him, though. Was this a bit too easy? And we’ve had no time to try to disable the security cameras.
